Bobcat Power

September 27th, 2007, 10:38 pm by Peter Rasmussen

I haven’t written much about Rio Hondo this year because the Bobacts have taken care of business against a soft schedule as expected. No matter their schedule, however, these guys are good.

Put Rio Hondo, which I think is the Class 3A version of Harlingen South, in a district with the five Brownsville schools and I don’t think it is much of a stretch to say the Bobcats can finish ahead of the Browntown schools in the final standings.

Rio Hondo has outscored its opponents 192-16. QB Joseph Vela (30-43-2, 421 yards, five TDs) leads Distirct 32-3A in passing. The Bobcats have depth in backfield led by RB Jacob Martinez (43-457, seven TDs).

I don’t think Martinez or Vela have played to thier full potential because of the lopsided games the Bobcats have competed in. The scariest thing about these two skill players is that they are only juniors.

Vela also has a reliable target in WR Shane Eizember (10-137, three TDs). The Bobcats, who have been strong on the defensive side of the ball during coach Gus Cavazos’ tenure, has a solid, physical defense that is yielding a Valley-low 89.0 ypg.

When Rio Hondo plays District 31-3A favorite Raymondville tonight, expect the Bobcats to beat the Bearkats soundly.

The only question for these Bobcats is if they can beat Port Isabel.
