Hidalgo Guards

The Lady Pirates have some young guards. Nashae Owens and Jessica Castillo are both freshmen. I know talking to Lady Pirates coach Monica Rodriguez, the Lady Pirates had some trouble early on in the back court because of their inexperience.

Rodriguez says their play has picked up as of late. After watching the game against La Feria last Friday, I think both, especially Owens have a lot potential.

I couldn’t write as much as I wanted about Owens in my game story because of space issues. Here it is incase you missed it: http://www.rgvsports.com/sports/hidalgo_1448___article.xml/play_feria.html

Rodriguez spoke about how poised Owens played late in the game. She really did a good job in the fourth quarter controlling the ball.

Both Owens and Castillo made mistakes and played tentative at times. At times they had trouble getting the ball to their posts Victoria Gonzalez and Mariana Mascorro.

When it mattered most, they stepped up. Hidalgo shoud be glad they have these two. Their future’s look bright. I think La Feria tried to pick on Owens late hoping she would not handle the pressure of late FTs in a close game or make costly errors, but she held her own.

What I noticed at the game

Hidalgo needs their gym back. Their gym is under going reconstruction. At this makeshift gym, they actually had folding chairs on the visiting side.

Everytime I have covered a sporting event at Hidalgo, they give me the red-carpet treatment. Maybe its cause im from Los Angeles. No really they are super nice.

Fans are loud and passionate and one even voiced her opinon personally.

Mariana is the heart and soul of that team.
