Eventful weekend

February 18th, 2008, 1:06 am by Peter Rasmussen

I started the weekend taking in an exciting night of girls basketball and I ended the weekend with a new dog … yes I am an animal owner for the first time.

On Saturday, I had to type in track results at the City of Palms. Instead of sitting outside in the heat, Memorial girls coach Noel Valero put me in an air-conditioned room. Thank you for that.

Later that day I went to a wedding and then paid a visit to the Mustang Lounge in Weslaco.(Hahahahaha, I probably should not admit that but a southern cali kid who wears converse should not be allowed in a country/tejano bar). Needless to say, I was not there very long.

On Sunday, I was a guest judge to pick the RGV Dorados dancers. Hard work but someone has to do it.

Later on Sunday I was back in Weslaco  (I should really stay away from the W) and wound up rescuing a dog. The Dauchsund was lost and attacked by another dog and he was bleeding badly. He is not out of the woods yet. I tried to get him to the vet but everyone was closed or out of town. I cleaned the wound and have him bandaged up but hes not eating or drinking anything and has only waken up occasionally. He’s going to the vet today. If anyone is missing a black dauchsund, let me know.

Owning a dog  was not something I imagined while covering the McHi-Economedes game Friday night. When the Lady Bulldogs finally took over in that game, that was the team I think could do well at the regional tourney. Andi Garza was unstoppable once she go the ball down low. There were extra passes that led to easy baskets and a somthering defense.

I am predicting a McHi win tonight. I’ll be there. McHI will play either O’Connor or Wagner at regionals. If its O’Connor, McHi has a great shot. Wagner, San Antonio’s No. 1 team, would be a tall task but the Lady T-Birds did have trouble early last Friday against a less-than stellar Warren team.

Don Juan I agree with you about the Rodriguez-Garza connection being sick. Rodriguez is a great passer and PG. She hasn’t gotten as much attention because her numbers and playing time are way down from last year, understandable. But I think her smarts will be helpful at regionals.

From what I heard from Jason McDaniel was that he also thinks Alexander can matchup well with South. It should be an interesting game. I am not sure if Alexander wins it would be an upset considering the Lady Bulldogs advanced to regionals last year and have had a very succesful year in their own right.

Hidalgo and La Feria have uphill battles but thats why they play the game.

It was a great weekend and I am looking forward to more basketball action this week.
