RE-PETE

Following high school sports all year

And then there was three

Congratulations to McAllen High, Harlingen South and La Feria for advancing to the regional tourney.

I heard the South-Alexander game was entertaining. I heard to expect guard Bianca Torre to be hassled with double and triple teams in the game. It looked like she was but she managed a big game. 20 points, 18 steals and 12 assists was her stat line.  She’s a good one.  South takes on San Antonio Madison at 8 p.m. Friday.

HIDALGO vs. WEST OSO

What I noticed is that the Hidalgo’s guards are very young and inexperienced. I saw this as a learning experince. They were hounded all game and found no way out of the press.

Nashae Owens and Jessica Castillo are only freshmen. I think Valley girls basketball fans will hear a lot about them in the years to come.

Victoria Gonzalez was not as dominating, mostly because they turned the ball over so much they couldn’t get it to her in the post. But what surprised me the most was how she couldn’t grab a rebound. She had only five but averages almost 19 a game. West Oso did a good job of boxing her out.

WAGNER POSTS

Lady T-Bird posts Amber Roberson and Breanna Brock are 6-3, 6-2 respectively. Here is a little info on Wagner.

This is just an example of the disparity that can occur when talking about stats. The following stats were taken from LMTOnline.com

    HARLINGEN SOUTH STATS:

Bianca Torre (22 points, five rebounds, six assists, 12 steals, two turn over, 12 box outs

    Bballjunkie,

When reading this blog i thought the same thing. Stats always need to be double checked and by the right people because as you can see, stats can become very deceiving. I never thought Torre averages so many everything… I think her bookkeeper and coaches giver her extra here and there.

As for Victoria and her averaging 20 rebounds per game and Mariana averaging 18. Everyone NEEDS to know that the ones in charge of the stats is Victoria’s mother.

And just like Morgan Brown, her mother also does the stats.

Pete says that he’s surprised Victoria only had 5 rebounds (15 below average) Well maybe because she has been given deceiving stats the whole year and she’s really not that good but on paper Torre, Gonzales, and Brown seem to be superwoman with all those stats.

Its sad that some of these girls will get all valley and all district honors because they are helped with these cheating stats.

I tend to agree that Gonzalez and Browns stats were a little padded. I think they were very generous in giving them rebounds. I hope they don’t use those stats to attract college coaches because that sounds like fraud.

Lovin’ the blogs Mr. Re-Pete. Short, yet so informative. If I lived in McAllen, this would be my home page. –mike in san diego
