Stat-Gate

February 21st, 2008, 12:33 am by Peter Rasmussen

A couple of readers pointed out the disparity in stats reported. I’m trying my best to get to the bottom of this but I am not sure what I can really uncover.

The Bianca Torre stats I used in my blog yesterday came from the Valley Morning Star story and Bballjunkie found stats from the Laredo Morning Times. But I’m almost sure both sets of stats came from the reporter not the coaches.

VMS stats: 20 points, 18 steals and 12 assists

LMT stats: 22 points, five rebounds, six assists, 12 steals

In defense of both reporters it is diffcult to take stats for both teams. I know I am not always sure when I take stats because it is difficult. I try to always double check my point totals with the official book and if a team has a stat person I like to check my numbers against those stats. McHi has a reliable person but some teams don’t have anyone or use students.

I am not sure who was right when it comes to theTorre stats but anyway you look at it, she produced some great numbers. I compared my numbers from the Cigarroa game to the Laredo paper’s and ours didn’t match up either but I did check with the book to make sure my number’s were accurate. Laredo’s point-total for McHi doesn’t add up to the total points McHi scored in the game.

When it comes to Victoria Gonzalez, I was not surprised she didn’t get 19 rebounds. I never expect someone to have 19 rebounds every game. I was more surprised how she was continually boxed out. A lot of times it was three against one. West Oso came in with a plan to limit her rebounds and did.

As far as season totals, I have to go on the word of the coaches because it is imposssible to watch game film on every single team and every single game. I know most coaches actually do go back and look at film.

I hope the stats aren’t padded but in all honesty Morgan Brown, Bianca Torre and Victoria Gonzalez are good players despite the stats. They are players any team can build around.

The times I have seen Brown play she has had more than 15 rebounds, including in the area round against McHi. The girl can rebound. And people have to remember South plays a really tough press and Torre benefits in the steals department because of it.

I hope I explained it the best I could from my end. I am sure people will have thier opinions and let me know.

On another note, La Feria’s trip to the regional quarterfinal is somewhat interesting. The Lionettes played Hidalgo for the first seed from District 32-3A and lost but they had an easier route to the regional quarterfinal. Hidalgo had a much tougher task in trying to beat West Oso. It could have easily been Hidalgo going to the regional quarterfinal if it lost the tiebreaker.

Flipping is the way to go unless it is a play-in game. Ive seen this with volleyball, soccer and now basketball, seeding games or tourneys are not always beneficial.
