I covered a soccer match Friday and had some of the same difficulties I’ve had when I was the soccer beat writer.
I like covering soccer because I enjoy the sport but sometimes it can be difficult to cover in the Valley.
I showed up at the McAllen Memorial-La Joya game and not to my surprise there were no rosters. I don’t think I have ever showed up to a boys match that had rosters readily available other than in the playoffs.
Memorial coach Mcsika Nguma tried to tell me the roster changes every game, which is understandable, I guess. But wouldn’t a team have the same core for every match, especially starters?
I was forced to copy the roster from the refs, or I could have sat on both benches well a player on the bench gives me the name and number of each player. I went with the former but that meant I wouldn’t know what grade or positon these guys play.
I undertsand soccer coaches want more coverage, and they have every right to express their opinions, but covering a soccer match should be breeze.
On another note, how about some fan support? No one goes to these games until the playoffs. I hear they draw well in Brownsville but what about the upper Valley?
The match was fun to watch. Both teams are solid. La Joya and Memorial are the third and fourth place team in District 30-5A, respectively, and they looked good. It goes to show how tough Valley competition is. Here is the story.
Monitor photographer Kirsten Luce and I were commenting about how good the game was but looked in the satnds and saw few people.
Intriguing baseball outcome from Friday
There could be a new No. 1 in the Valley as No. 2 La Joya beat No. 1 Edinburg High 2-0.

You’re never gonna find a pastrami sandwich that will be better than Jims…you can blame it on nostalgia. How’s Kingston?
